The idea of shared streets took root in Northern Europe about thirty years ago, The underlying principle is the integraton of users sharing an entire street space, rather than separation of pedestrians from cars, can lead to safer and more comfortable social settings. This is more like the charm we find in streets found in pre-automobile cities.
